VUTHA Horror: Toddler's Life Cut Short by Mystery Flames
The tragic loss of little Blessing Mpete's life has left a community in shock and grief. A two-year-old toddler, Blessing, met her untimely end in a fire that ravaged her family's home.
The fire, suspected to be caused by VUTHA (a mysterious phenomenon), destroyed the three-roomed shack, leaving behind a trail of devastation. Martha Mpete, the grandmother, described the scene as a nightmare, with all her cherished amadlozi regalia, bones, and muthi reduced to ashes.
On the morning of November 11, 2025, at around 6:30 am, the evil flames engulfed the shack. Martha, overcome with emotion, recounted her harrowing experience. She had a premonition three weeks prior, a dream where her ancestors warned her of fire. And tragically, her granddaughter's life was cut short while she slept.
Martha's account reveals a chilling detail: she momentarily left Blessing alone in the toilet while she attended to personal matters. Upon returning, she discovered the unthinkable—a raging inferno engulfing her home. Despite their efforts, the fire proved too powerful to control.
The aftermath was heart-wrenching. Blessing's body was beyond recognition, a stark reminder of the fire's relentless destruction. The family, including Martha's twin sister, Maria Mashili, and her husband, Tebogo Mpete, were devastated. They struggled to comprehend the loss of their beloved granddaughter.
The community's shock and trauma were palpable. Themba Shezi, a neighbor, expressed the collective anguish, while Ward Committee member Joseph Ntloedibe acknowledged the profound impact on the community. The sangoma, Dorah Ngobeni, attributed the fire to the anger of the ancestors, urging the family to perform rituals at their Lebotlwane home in the North West.
The North West Social Development MEC, Basetsana Sussana Dantjie, offered condolences and emphasized the importance of never leaving children unattended. She assured the family of support, with social workers collaborating with Home Affairs to expedite the application process for life documents.
The North West Police, through Colonel Adéle Myburgh, confirmed the opening of an inquest docket. On November 10, 2025, at 7 am, the grandmother discovered the burning shack while using the outside toilet. Despite their efforts, Blessing could not be saved, perishing inside the flames.
Blessing's funeral is scheduled for November 15 in Swartdam, a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring impact of such tragic events.
